How everyday practices for using, washing and maintaining workwear affect food safety and sustainability.

This survey was conducted by Norstat, a leading independent European market research data collector.

It took place in February 2025 across 11 European countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Türkiye. A total of 2,276 employees who use workwear participated, 940 of whom work in the food industry.

The paper specifically focuses on the food industry segment, analysing how everyday practices of wearing, washing, and maintaining workwear can impact food safety and business sustainability.

Some findings of the study:

  • 73% of food industry employees take their work clothes home for washing to 
  • 64% wash work clothes at temperatures below 70°C, insufficient to eliminate bacteria
  • 33% are unaware of any standards or regulations their production site must follow

  • 18% believe that appropriate workwear influences their productivity

  • 79% of employees say that sustainability is important to them
